My nephew Nathan's DARE essay

This was written by my 10-year-old nephew Nathan, and he read it as a speech at his 5th-grade DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)graduation. You may be familiar with DARE; it's a program taught to kids by police officers.

Nathan goes to a public school, and I thought it was remarkable that he used his DARE speech as an opportunity to witness for Jesus. I think this is an excellent speech, and I just wanted to brag on my little nephew.

What D.A.R.E. Means To Me

This is my D.A.R.E. Essay. I feel the D.A.R.E. Program helps kids learn not to smoke or do drugs or be in gangs. D.A.R.E. also teaches grownups that already do smoke why to stop. D.A.R.E. teaches what will happen if you do drugs. D.A.R.E. tell you what to say if someone asks you to be in a gang or do drugs. In these next paragraphs I will tell you the reasons I have for not doing drugs.

What I have learned that will keep me from doing drugs are the effects of the drug, what will happen if I do them, I just don’t want to do drugs, and that they are illegal Nobody in my family has done drugs so I won’t do them. My grandpa is a preacher my dad is the assistant preacher and my uncle is a sergeant detective. They all taught me not to do drugs. I have no reason to, so why should I do drugs. I don’t think its cool. I think its stupid. I mean, why waste my freedom, my parent’s trust, or my life over something I think is stupid.

I think it is important to stay drug-free so I won’t lose my parent’s trust, my friends, my freedom or my life. God has more plans for me in the future. I’m not going to waste my time doing drugs. There’s no reason that I know for me to do drugs. Even if I had reason I still wouldn’t do drugs. I’d ask Jesus to help me through it. One thing about D.A.R.E. is that they don’t choose a choice for you (good or bad) they just tell you the choices and encourage you to make the right choice. This is my D.A.R.E. essay. Thank you my father, grandpa, uncle and D.A.R.E. officer for telling me all these reasons for not being in gangs doing drug and many other things.

Signed,

Nathan Walther
